2020 has seen all of our touch boundaries challenged and affected. What seemed a perfectly natural way of greeting or showing affection has possibly even become taboo. Where once we would enjoy touch and hugs we now question these actions. There have been numerous studies over the years showing how important touch is to general mental health, the development of a child and even lonely elderly people as well as the significance of, or lack of, physical interaction within relationships.

A simple hug can improve your day exponentially. An unsolicited touch can put you on guard. A slight brush of someone that you are attracted to can ignite and stir. Touching someone who is unwell can show empathy and care whilst even assisting in the healing. As a result of the boundaries that are advised at the moment to stay safe, we remain starved of touch. Where once if we needed affirmation or just a small recharge we asked for a hug from a friend or even dished out the hugs. We now find ourselves without these small gestures and not even conscious as to how much they are missing from our day or how much our body is craving touch. Touch with intention is a powerful and amazing tool to use. Just a gentle touch on the upper arm affirms and tells a person that they are okay.

Touch for healing

Massage is another perfect way to get our touch fix and quota up. The Integumentary System, or skin, is our largest organ and as such can infuse our entire body with endorphins that help to release stress hormones. Massage also stimulates the lymphatic system releasing built up toxins in the muscles and tissue. It encourages more mobility and flexibility as well as recovery of soft tissue injuries. The most important reason is to reconnect your body to to the world around you using the powerful and healing qualities of touch. And of course the added benefit of walking away more relaxed and nurtured. Book your appointment today and enjoy all the benefits that massage has to offer.
